At Summit School we are constantly working to improve the use of technology in education. Our goals are generally two-fold. Our first goal is to enhance student learning experiences in language arts, social studies, science, math, and foreign language. In these classes the computer is used as a tool, and skills are integrated into all facets of the curriculum. Our second goal is to expose students to today's technology, preparing them to comfortably use technology once they have graduated from Summit. Technology experiences are not limited to word processing and internet use. Summit's technology program ranges from experiences with robotics, electronics, animation, and video production to music, graphic design, and working with forms and structures in the Design Center. Summit has 6 traditional computer labs: one in middle grades with 20+ computers, a Dell lab (20+) for middle grades and junior high use, a mac lab (20+) for middle grades and junior high, a mac lab for K-3 (10 computers) and 2 mini labs (8-10 computers). In addition to the labs, we utilize 2 laptop carts (10 per cart) for classes. There are 1-5 computers in each of the classrooms contributing to a total of 420 computers available for student use - that is more than one computer for every two students. Nine smartboard rooms are available for multimedia presentations. Summit has wireless internet access (wifi) throughout the library, middle grades building, science building, and second floor of the junior high, first, second and third grades and JrK. Students also use the a/v production studio to create their own broadcasts for Summit TV 6, our closed-circuit television channel. A screening room (with 90+ seats) is available for viewing special presentations. Junior high students have the opportunity to take part in classes in computer animation, robotics, and electronic music. In computer animation, students use Flash to create animated shorts. In electronic music, students use GarageBand to create their own music, mix it, and burn the final product to cd. |
