Welcome to Middle School. This is a place where children, through the development of a disciplined mind and the pursuit of creative endeavors, become increasingly responsible for their own learning. We afford our students the opportunity to experience research projects at each grade level beginning with Living Biographies in fourth grade and ending with the Canada and Mexico projects in our sixth grade. Our Everyday Mathematics program provides multiple opportunities for our students to investigate mathematics with practical applications. In science, all of our children explore scientific principle in a variety of ways, including hands-on experiments. Students are taught across the curriculum that writing is a process that often goes well beyond first draft preparation.

The field trip opportunities abound with overnight trips occurring in fifth and sixth grades where our students travel to the Penn Center. Our fourth graders go in groups of three to serve as young apprentices at Historic Bethabara where they assist second graders from all over North Carolina during tours.

Social Studies begins in fourth grade with a study of Colonial America through the Civil War with a focus on North Carolina. The fifth graders focus on U. S. history beginning with Reconstruction through the present.  The sixth graders familiarize themselves with the geography of the Western Hemisphere. They research and prepare oral reports on various aspects of Canadian and Mexican cultures.

We welcome your comments as we pursue excellence through meaningful educational opportunities for all of our students. The formation of such a partnership between parent, student and teacher goes a long way toward ensuring success. We appreciate your giving careful thought and consideration to what a Summit education can do for your child.
