| Community Service | Study Skills in Junior High By Junior High, most students with special needs have been identified and needs are being addressed. The Junior High language specialist teaches study skills to all students who do not take a foreign language. She works closely with classroom teachers, advisors, and tutors to coordinate the students’ learning support program. The Junior High LD Coordinator monitors accommodations for students with learning differences to make sure they are being used appropriately and provides support for teachers who need strategies for working with students with learning differences. She works with the Coordinator of Tutoring to obtain appropriate tutors and serves as a liaison with tutors, classroom teachers, and parents. With input from parents, teachers and tutors, she may develop an individualized plan for some students and monitor the plan to make sure work done with the tutor is integrated with classroom assignments and expectations. The LD Coordinator provides opportunities for parents to meet about pertinent topics and may attend parent conferences. The goal of the Student Support Program in Junior High is to help students become their own advocates in the teaching learning process. General Remarks Summit’s philosophy is to value the different gifts and learning styles which students bring to the classroom. We provide professional growth opportunities for teachers in working with students with learning differences. Many of our teachers have significant training in the area and often share their knowledge with colleagues. We value a team approach for student support and encourage families to explore resources available in-house before turning to outside professionals. We serve our students best when tutors understand Summit’s philosophy and provide a multi-sensory, sequential language and/or math program for students. The Coordinator of tutoring interviews potential tutors and, with the help of the appropriate coordinator, assigns students to tutors. Our goal is to equip students with sufficient skills and strategies so that eventually they will be independent learners. We know we support students best when parents are a vital part of the team. Working with students with learning differences is a process rather than a quick fix and we are fortunate to have many resources to support the process.
