    About Homework

Life/SCALE is a half-credit course taken by all ninth graders. Rather than a class that meets daily, it is a series of activities on and off campus. Life/SCALE   activities include: introductory sessions at the beginning of the year, Camp High Rocks, Executive Council leadership, service project participation, leadership luncheons, the career internship experience, RAP sessions with Dr. Adams, and advisory sessions with advisors.

"Life" refers to life skills that we emphasize through our individual classes and with our advisees. Time management and specific study strategies including an emphasis on daily review are incorporated into all subject areas and are monitored by advisors. "SCALE" means Summit Career and Leadership Exploration.

A student from each advisor group is elected each term to serve as leaders of the Executive Council.   These representatives plan some service opportunities, social events, and coordinate school spirit activities.   In addition, ninth grade students as Summit Service Club members manage most service projects for the Jr. High. An adult sponsor helps students organize and present announcements in assemblies, post sign-up sheets, and thank participants following the service opportunity. Students also often fill out transportation requests and contact the agency involved to set up specifics. Each ninth grader serves on a committee and organizes one service project. Ninth graders also participate in three focused projects throughout the year to provide them with more in-depth experience.

During November, students take the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory and complete a Values and Interests Survey in preparation for the Career Internship experience in the spring. Using information from these tools, students do preliminary career research to explore possible careers that would be meaningful to them. During January, a staff member contacts community members to set up a half-day internship for each student. In February or March during the actual Career Internship block, students complete   a more in-depth research paper on the career selected from their choices; learn to make a professional phone call; learn to write a professional confirmation letter; have an experience off campus; write a reflection; and present their experience to their classmates.
