| About Homework | Summit's three year Junior High program is designed to continue the development of well-rounded students. In addition to challenging academics, students participate in a broad range of activities including arts, interscholastic sports, and service projects. Their social and emotional growth is enhanced by involvement in our advisory program. One of our main goals is for each student to feel important and to have a sense of belonging. Our day includes five academic periods (English, foreign language, math, science, and social studies), an activity period, and a study hall or physical education period, depending upon whether or not a student participates in an after-school sport. Each academic course begins with a thorough study skills orientation. Activity period is a time for students to experience activities such as art, pottery, computers, cooking, first aid, public speaking, etc. Students have study hall with their advisors, and that is also a time when they can seek extra help from their other teachers if necessary. Our Junior High has a long tradition of outstanding drama productions and musicals. Eighth and ninth graders may elect to participate in a comedy between fall and winter sports seasons or a musical between the winter and spring sports seasons. Art I is offered between the sports seasons in lieu of participation in the drama/comedy/musical. We offer fourteen sports for boys and girls. Most Junior High students play at least one sport. The emphasis is on participation, skill building, and sportsmanship, but we also try to be competitive with the schools we play. Our ninth grade Executive Council sponsors a special service project each month, and, in a typical school year, our students contribute a thousand hours of community service. Students enjoy experiencing the good feeling that comes from helping others and the tremendous bonding power of shared activities. The Junior High has a talented, dedicated, experienced faculty that truly enjoys the challenge of working with students who are changing and growing so rapidly. They get to know each student well, and, in their roles as advisors, they ensure that each student has an advocate. We believe in a strong parent/school partnership, and we know that good communication is a key component of that relationship. Each week we send a newsletter so parents are knowledgeable about activities in the Junior High. Advisors meet with parents at the mid-point of each trimester to share academic information from each subject teacher. Teachers may update parents at any time during the school year if necessary, and parents should feel free to call if they have any questions or comments. We look forward to getting to know you and your child. Dane Perry |
