Summit Chess Club

Many Summit children have enjoyed attending our Chess Club and Chess Camps over the last few years. Playing chess has been shown to have a positive impact on intellectual and emotional growth.

A child is welcome to join us provided he or she:
1. Has a basic understanding of the game.
2. Follows directions given by staff and parent volunteers.
3. Keeps the chess playing area clean and quiet.
4. Maintains good sportsmanship at all times.

Second grade teacher Jan Standerfer, sixth grade teacher Paul Sinal and lower primary head Jeff Turner will supervise the club which will meet on the following Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in the Dining Room for Young Children.

If a child is in the Afterschool Program, he or she may attend Chess Club, but you must send a permission note to Jolene Simmons each Thursday. We welcome parents who play chess to attend as well. There is no need to register and players need not attend every session. It is important that Chess Club participants be picked up at 5:00 p.m. (unless enrolled in Afterschool past 5:00).

Chess club is designed for students in grades 1-9. Please contact Jeff Turner if you have any questions (jturner@summitschool.com or ext. 114).

CHESS CLASS
BEGINNER LEVEL 2

Mrs. Standerfer will offer a chess class for relatively new players in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. She will present a brief review of the pieces and their movements, teach the best opening moves and discuss how to develop the middle of the board. Children should know chess basics and have a personal interest in the game. The class consists of two sessions during Chess Club on March 6 and 13. Space is limited to 12 students. To enroll, please e-mail Jan Standerfer (jstndfer@summitschool.com) by Monday, March 3.
