Ninth Grade RAP
(Reflections and Perceptions)

Ninth grade RAP focuses on issues and ideas that require students to reflect on the values and information they use to make decisions. We use case studies as a basis for discussion. Results of a survey given at the beginning of each RAP session also guide the topics. Examples of questions on the survey are:

1. What are the best and worst things about being your age?
2. What makes you happy?
3. What is the best guideline for ninth graders to use regarding alcohol use?
4. What is the best guideline for ninth graders to use regarding sex?
5. How will you know you are successful as an adult?

Discussion often centers on healthy relationships, dealing with pressure, self-knowledge, gender differences, love and trust. A video advocating abstinence serves as a basis for discussion about healthy sexual decisions.
Ninth graders are respectful of each other, willing to take a stand on important issues, and eager to share insights. I am fortunate to share RAP with them.
