The
Physical Education program reflects the school’s commitment to
the development of the whole child. Daily opportunities are provided
for all students to develop a healthy, active lifestyle. The curriculum
is a sequential progression designed to improve skill development,
foster positive self-images, and enhance each student’s ability
to interact cooperatively.
Primary
Grades (JrK through 3rd Grade)
The focus in primary grades is movement. Students learn fair play, cooperation,
risk taking, sportsmanship, and are introduced to beginner skills through games,
dance, and gymnastics. Participation and skill development are emphasized rather
than competition.
Middle Grades
(4th through 6th Grade)
In Middle Grades, skill development, sportsmanship, and teamwork are emphasized,
building on the foundations established in primary grades. Small games are
utilized to provide each student with many opportunities for hands-on experience.
Teachers help students learn about rules and game strategies.
In the 6th grade, there is a gradual increase in competitive play to ease students’ transition
into the Jr. High and interscholastic competition.
Jr. High
(7th through 9th Grade)
In the Jr. High, students may participate on a sports team that competes
interscholastically or may participate in a physical education class.
Both programs stress participation, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Sports offered in the fall are football, boys’ soccer,
girls’ volleyball, field hockey, girls’ tennis. Winter sports are
boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, and lifetime sports. If a
student does not participate in one of these activities during the winter sports
season, they may select physical education, intramural gymnastics, or intramural
basketball. Spring sports include baseball, softball, boys’ tennis, lacrosse,
golf, and girls’ soccer. At this level, specific instruction is provided
to help students develop skills for each sport and skills for fitness and healthy
lifestyle choices.
