Students gain experiences in the visual arts starting in junior kindergarten, but they begin going to art classes in the first grade.

First Grade In art children are provided experiences to help them observe their environment with sensitivity and creativity. Students have many opportunities to use and explore a wide range of materials and media in drawing, painting, and construction (sculpture, crafts) each year.
First graders study nature and create art projects related to the nature experience. Some of the topics included are: insects, vegetables, fruits, the egg, the tree, the earth and sky, weather, birds, the seashore, and flowers.

Second Grade Second Graders begin their year with a mirror and oil pastels. Originality and creativity are emphasized with a look at their own unique facial features, hair and style of dress. Throughout the year, we work with challenging materials, such as clay, watercolors, tempera paints, beading, origami and 3-D totem pole design. These students experience the world of possibilities in art from expressionistic painting, kimono design, to graphic design. We have fun during our busy and productive school year!

Third Grade Third Graders also start their year with a self portrait. So many changes occur between second and third grade! They must be documented by one’s self! In addition, sculpture is introduced to the students as they form their own pioneers out of clay. Careful choices are made in the selection of colors with which they are glazed. Printmaking, painting and collage expand the students’ repertoire of art experiences. Third grade is an exciting time for the young and industrious!

Fourth Grade Fourth Grade is a good time for an introduction to colonial architecture. Students explore the structure of colonial buildings as they learn the colonists’ basic needs to survive. Architectural components are incorporated into student-designed colonial villages. Color theory lessons come alive with tempera painting and watercolor projects.

Fifth Grade Fifth Graders research architecture for a linoleum printing project. Students practice their drawing skills, carve their image into easy-cut linoleum plates, roll with ink to produce first edition prints based on the architecture of their home. Students also study mosaic art and create a paper and/or painted mosaic as well.

Sixth Grade Sixth Graders continue their study of Art History. The paintings and drawings of Gustav Klimt serve as inspiration for their self portraits. Students pick an artist to research and emulate the chosen style in a variety of media.

Seventh Grade Seventh Graders study Greek Culture. Students use problem-solving skills to meet the challenges of leatherworking and mask design. Students construct dramatic masks representing the Greek God or Goddess of their choice. Their mask masterpieces are then entered into a juried contest and prizes are awarded during a Banquet ceremony. OPAH!
