Summit students receive musical instruction in all grades. Students have many opportunities to perform during their Summit career. The following is a brief description of the music curriculum.

Junior Kindergarten  Four days a week, the children spend 20 minutes with a music specialist teacher. They dance, play instruments, learn about pitch, rhythm, volume and tone and discover the instruments of the orchestra.   Music is used to teach self-expression, exploration, creativity, listening, coordination and self confidence.   Singing is a daily activity and everyone's favorite!

Senior Kindergarten  Three days a week, the children spend 30 minutes with a music specialist.   They are becoming more aware of their voices and bodies, so activities often involve singing, rhythm and movement.   They learn about pitch, volume and tone, use rhythm instruments and discover more about orchestral instruments.    The study of composers and their music are used to teach history, basic musical and listening skills and the structures of music.

First Grade  First Graders journey to the music room every third week for daily 30 minute lessons.   They are encouraged to further develop their singing skills and proper vocal technique is emphasized.   The study of composers and their music is used to teach children history, musical structures and listening.   Movement is a natural venue in music to experience creativity, self-expression and rhythm.   1 st Graders also begin learning the values of notes and simple rhythm reading.   Once a year, they present a program for their parents in the theatre.

Second Grade  Second graders have many musical experiences in melody, harmony, rhythm and form. They are introduced to music as a written language and begin to read music on the staff and play simple songs together on the melody bells.   They continue to develop their musical skills and creative capacities through song, dance, movement, composition and rhythm instruments.   In February, second graders perform for their parents in the theatre.   They also perform Native American music and dance during their study of Native Americans.

Third Grade  The music curriculum allows students to develop their singing voices, creative capacities and musical concepts through classroom activities and performances.   Instruction is also provided for the recorder during which students learn basic playing technique, how to play as part of an ensemble and how to play with good tone and expression.   Recorder is also used to teach the signs and symbols of music as well as note reading.   Students perform songs and a square dance in the fall at Pioneer Day and they perform the Third Grade Play in the early spring.

Fourth Grade Fourth grade students continue expanding their range in singing and improving their singing ability. They continue to play the recorder, and their work with movement includes folk dancing and square dancing. Students learn music from different periods of U.S. History in conjunction with the “Living Biographies” project. Fourth graders perform at the Holiday Sing in December.

Fifth Grade Fifth grade students sing songs from our own and other cultures. Good singing techniques are encouraged. Major instruments are studied along with rhythm movements that express style. These skills are used in folk and square dancing. Fifth graders perform at the Holiday Sing in December.

Sixth Grade Sixth grade students continue to develop singing and movement skills which are used extensively in their musical/drama/dance production. The music and lives of musicians are taught along with various types of instruments. Handbell ringing is introduced which results in making the students more aware of musical notation and rhythm.

Seventh Grade Greek music and dance forms are studied. Students also have an opportunity to sing folk songs.

Eighth Grade Eighth grade students present a musical performance with students from Forsyth Vocational High School. Students also participate in the annual Junior High drama or musical.

Ninth Grade Students may participate in the Junior High drama or musical production; the graduation program includes singing and handbells.
