Brook Barnes Foltz has a daughter, Katie, who is a freshman at UNC-G and a son, Hardin, who is a junior at Appalachian.1967
Becky Lewis , living in rural upstate New York, volunteered at her son's public school, then ran for a place on the school board and was later elected chair. When her son Carter entered his teens, she started graduate studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo, earning her master's degree and, last June, her Ph.D. in foundations of education. She is now teaching part-time at the university and continues to chair the local school board. Her husband, Roger Bruce, is Director of Education at George Eastman House, a museum of photography in Rochester, NY.
Reg Garner had two weddings in his family this year! Heyward ('97) was married in April and Dorothea ('95) in October. He says, "it has been a busy and fun year." Elizabeth ('05) will graduate in June, marking the end of 21 straight years as Summit parents.
Jeannie Lybrook Turner lives in Advance, N.C, hoping to move back to Tall Trees Farm soon. She writes, "my children are grown. Jennifer is 23 years old and hoping to finish her studies at UNC-Chapel Hill. Summer is 21 years old and lives in Wilmington. Robert is 19 and William is 14. They are home schooling."1969
Duncan Lewis recently installed two sculptures in downtown Winston-Salem. One is an eight-foot sculpture in steel, Plexiglas and molded brass powder of a hand of tobacco, placed in the lobby of a new eleven-story building, One West Fourth, on the courthouse square. The sculpture was commissioned by classmate Bill Wilson '69 whose consortium, Magnolia Partners, developed the building. The second sculpture, commissioned by !dealliance, the organization which is developing the 180-acre Piedmont Triad Research Park, is placed in the center of a one-acre plaza southeast of City Hall. Made of tapering stainless steel tubes rising from a black steel cylinder surrounded by bronze rings, the sculpture honors the "father" of the research park, Dr. C. Douglas Maynard, father of Doug '78, Deanne '80 and David '82. Duncan lives in Rural Hall with his wife, Ulrike Weithaus, a professor of humanities at Wake Forest. He left his position as sculpture and drawing instructor at Winston-Salem State University to pursue a master's degree in fine arts at UNC-G.
DeWitt Chatham Kierstead and husband Jeff have 3 grown children now in college. She says, "we're enjoying Winston - there's still more going on here than we get to attend - largely because of '69-ers' community involvement!"
Elizabeth (Beth) Lamberti Smith lives in Raleigh and writes to "wish everyone a healthy and happy holiday." She continues, "I wish that I could see everyone and catch up."

William S. Benbow is building ships in Mobile, AL. He was recently named a master craftsman with specialized skills as a machinist, shipfitter and welder. He writes, "my wish is to be at the next Summit reunion."1971
Though now the mother of two children, Finn, age 5 and Harriet, age 3, Celia Lewis is working full time as Assistant to the Head of Cold Spring School, in New Haven, CT, an independent school covering kindergarten through grade eight. Last June, Celia was awarded a Ph.D. in environmental studies from Antioch college, just six days before her older sister Becky '67 was awarded hers. Celia's husband, Michael Anderson, is currently working on a 24-foot-tall sculpture of a dinosaur to be cast in bronze and placed in front of Yale's Peabody Museum of Natural History where he works as a preparator of exhibitions.
Joseph R. Valentine was ordained a Catholic priest in 1993. He is currently pastor at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Vienna, OH.
Laura Thrift, a junior at Johns Hopkins Univ. has been named one of 15 Aitchison Fellows to study at the Hopkin's Graduate School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Wahsington, D.C. and to intern on Capitol Hill in the fall of 2004.1972
Malcolm Duncan writes, "our class never had a very good relationship with the Summit administration - it was the 60's."
Todd Johnson has been living in Charlotte for 23 years. He is chairman and CEO of Hospital Partners of America. He writes, "my 4 kids have grown up too quickly - 19, 17, 14 and 11. I see some of my old Summit cohorts at kids' sporting events between Summit and Charlotte Latin every so often."1973

Ellen Nordstrom Baer writes that her life has been "wonderfully busy-prom and driver's license for daughter, Abby and graduate studies in Latin American musicology for her husband, Helmut, at McGill University in Montreal." Ellen has been team-teaching jazz students at Dartmouth, continuing her teaching at St. Paul's and the Concord Community Music School and is heading the Voice Department at Phillip's Exeter Academy's summer program. She recently received word that she has been listed in the "Who's Who Among American Teachers for 2004."

Debbie Southern has been womens' tennis coach at Furman for the past 20 years. The Furman teams, which have not lost to a Southern Conference opponent since March, 1999, have 50 straight league wins.
Heidi Hatfield married Charles Karelis on May 22nd. A number of Summit alums celebrated with them including Karen and Robin Howell ('74), Cinny Strickland and William Graham ('73), Karan Martinat Witt ('75), Millicent McClean Bain ('75) and Terrell Mellen McDermid ('71).
Elizabeth Medlin Hale has 3 boys: Sheffield 15, Thomas 13, and John 11. Her husband, Sheffield, is Chief Counsel for the American Cancer Society which is headquartered in Atlanta. Elizabeth is doing lots of volunteer work for shools, Camp Sunshine (a camp for kids with cancer) and for the Forward Arts Foundation.1975
Rob Grubbs and wife Caroline had a son, Robert W. Grubbs, III (Warner) on November 1st. Warner is the younger brother of Sarah ('15) and Ellie ('16).
Martha Benbow Pelot, who lives in Punta Gorda, FL, with her husband and cat, survived Hurricane Charley. Although the outside of their home was damaged, the inside is intact.
Mary Louise Eller Ball writes that she "is the joyful mommie of Gus (2 1/2) and Sally (1 1/2)." She is a freelance writer in New York City and rides every chance that she gets.1977
After pursuing a variety of jobs in real estate, nonprofit agencies, and computer web site management in Washington, DC, Raleigh, and Atlanta, as well as in the counseling department at the University of Tennessee (putting to use his University of Florida master's in counseling), Malcolm Lewis has settled in Raleigh, now working in commercial real estate and enjoying it immensely. His major project is the adaptive reuse of a couple of warehouses near Peace College in downtown Raleigh. With his wife Marty Worthy, who works for a different real estate firm, he is raising their two children: Emilie, age 5 and Hoyt, age 2. Little time for golf now.1979
Gigi Perkinson Hershey writes that she had a daughter, Olivia Louisa on July 1, 2003. She wishes "that Summit was in Easton, MD for Olivia to attend." She reports that Gail Taylor Coote '79 also has a girl, Lily Elizabeth. The mothers enjoy e-mailing each other about their girls.
Lloyd Barnhardt III writes "life is great! I'm still with Merrill Lynch in Winston-Salem and have 2 beautiful daughters in kindergarten at Summit."

In July 2004, Deanne E. Maynard joined the Solicitor General's office of the U.S. Department of Justice where she represents the United States in the U.S. Supreme Court. She continues to live in Alexandria, VA, with her husband, Charlie, and daughter, Carrie, age 3.1982
Bryan Adams served as co-executive producer of the new "Jeff Foxworthy Show" which began on the WB channel last summer. The show featured other members of the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour." He worked on the show during the hiatus of "Mad TV" where he is a writer and supervising producer.
Rob Edwards is a partner at Bank of America Capital Investors, a private equity firm. Robert, age 7, is a 1st grader at Charlotte Country Day School. Jake, 5, and Elizabeth, 4, are in the pre-school program at Christ Church kindergarten.
Felicia Sharpe Doobrow and her husband have a sales agency in Greensboro, the Doobrow Group, which sells footwear, socks and accessories. They have a 6 1/2 year old daughter named Carly who attends B'nai Shalom School. Carly is in the first grade. Helen Sherk Holzwarth is Carly's godmother.1983

Alex Winters graduated from Harvard Business School and is working with Northbridge Capital in Boston. He married Kathleen Jane Reid of Boston in June. He writes, "Summit is the best school experience one could imagine."

Ric Leinbach and his wife are expecting their second child in May. In addition, the Leinbachs will be moving to High Point, N.C. in July where he will be joining an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery practice.1984

Margaret Garrou married John Fitzgibbon on October 11, 2003 in San Francisco where the couple lives. Margaret is the acquisition editor for Peaceable Kingdom.
Charles Walker's show "10 Paintings for a Library" was installed in the Summit library's third floor gallery in March, 2004. The paintings are acrylic on paper mounted on canvas. Charles received a degree in art with a studio concentration from Wake Forest University and a M.F.A. in art from the University of Georgia. Dack Stackhouse was teaching in Chang Mai, Burma, in the Foreign Affairs Training Program. The program trains students to interact effectively with journalists and diplomats as members of foreign affairs offices in their respective organizations. Dack also worked for an American man who sells Thai-massage related items and helped a Scotsman edit his semi-autobiographical novel. He also spent time last winter teaching social studies in the Intensive College Foundation Course, where he first taught after moving to Burma. Dack spent December 2003 traveling in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Dack is now living in Winston-Salem again.

Elisabeth Frost Dresel recently married and her husband, Paul, is a high school English teacher. She graduated from UNC Law School in 2000 and is working as an Assistant District Attorney prosecuting child abuse, sex crimes and juvenile delinquency.
Gar Ragland and his wife, Margit, live in Boston and love it! He works as a music producer and travels alot. They are considering making a move down South in the near future.

Whit Edwards and wife, Fleming, welcomed a second son, Grady Shuford (called Shuford) on March 10, 2004. Son, Whit, Jr., turned two in April, 2004. Whit completed an MBA at Darden Graduate School of Business in May, 2003 and is currently operations manager for Gilbarco-VeederRoot. The Edwards live in Greensboro.
Eleanor Popham Broughton was born January 13, 2004 to Charlotte Chandler Broughton and her husband, David. She was also welcomed home by big sister Winborne.

Jessica Dawn Watkins Griege and husband Chuck welcomed their second child, Amelia Grace, on December 3, 2003. She joins big brother Charlie, born January 7, 2002. They live in Dallas where Chuck runs a hedge fund and Jessica is a fulltime mom.
Shakira Hand Humble and husband, Scott, are currently in D.C. where he is finishing his fellowship with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in bone and soft tissue. They will be moving to Miami in June where Scott has taken a bone and soft tissue pathology position with the University of Miami's Cedars and Jackson Hospitals. Shakira is currently working with Global Exchange Services in electronic data interchange sales between major corporations and small suppliers. When they move to Miami, she plans to resume her membership in the Junior League and will also play tennis at the 4.0 USTA level.
Worth Mitchell married Tara Williams on Sept. 4, 2004. The couple lives in High Point. Worth is publishing a book next year and is currently the President and Chairman of The Sea Dweller Companies LLC which is a land investment, property management, construction and development company.

Clif Koufman lives in Portland, OR, where he is self-employed, teaching percussion, rhythm, keyboard, and African drum classes. He teaches both children and adults in individual and group settings. He also works as a music therapist for the local Children's Cancer Society.
Kendra Grubbs recently received the Nursing of Excellence Award given each year by Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Cullen Moss appears in the film "The Notebook" based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. He plays a member of the wedding party in the film, which comes out this summer.
Brennan Spry graduated in May 2000 from UNC-Flagler School of Business. He and wife, Amy, will move to Manhattan in August where Brennan will work for Lehman Brothers and Amy will work as a physical therapist at a local hospital.

In August, 2004, David Martin married Valerie Rogers in a ceremony held at dawn on the top of Max Patch on the Appalachian Trail. The bride's and groom's immediate families hiked up for the ceremony which was followed by a party by the river with lots of friends and family.1991

Wood Chatham has been promoted to senior analyst with Maverick Capital in New York. Maverick Capital is one of the leading hedge funds on Wall Street. Wood attained the title of Certified Financial Analyst after successfully completing the three year CFA course.
John Lea Reynolds is pursuing an organic chemistry PhD at Wake Forest University where he performs photochemical research.

Blair Strickland Bergevin had a son, Robert Daniel Bergevin on October 1st. The proud great-grandmother is Anne Barber Strickland ('41) and the proud grandfather is C. Barbour Strickland, III ('67).

Caroline Mitchell Poteat married Landon Poteat in October, 2004 after finishing nursing school at UNC-Chapel Hill. The couple lives in Asheville where Landon is a dentist and Caroline works at Mission St. Joseph's Hospital. Summit friends in the wedding included Caroline's classmates, Kelly Bouldin, Ann Brown Crowder Campbell, Suzanne Davis Campbell, Annie Perry and Elizabeth Peterson.

Zach Albertson and wife, Becca, welcomed a daughter, Leah Tyler, on February 18, 2004. Zach works for Aon and is studying to become an actuary. Rebecca is working for Carolina Adoption Services, an adoption agency in Greensboro, where she is the head of adoptions for South America.
Dorothea Garner married Matt McCollum on October 9, 2004 at Centenary United Methodist Church. She reports, "we live in town now, just off Country Club Rd.".

Kyle Goodridge graduated from the University of Michigan in 2003 with a double major in History and Political Science. He was a U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship Cadet who received a Distinguished Medal upon induction into the army as a Second Lieutenant. He did his Officer Basic Training at Ft. Bliss, TX, followed by 3 weeks of Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA, where he qualified as a certified paratrooper. He is now stationed at Camp Casey Command Headquarters of the Second Infantry Division in South Korea, 10 miles from the DMZ. He is a member of the 5th Battalion Dragonslayers, 5th Battery Wardawgs and Platoon Leader for the 2nd Platoon Deuces Wild supporting a Field Air Defense Artillery unit.

Hannah Albertson spent the fall semester of 2003 in Perugia, Italy studying the Italian language and literature as well as Renaissance art history. She fell in love with the country and plans to go back after graduating from the University of Virginia in May, 2004. Her mother, Martha Albertson, who teaches math in the Junior High, went to visit her for ten days last November.
Heyward Garner and Tiffany Brickey were married on April 24 in Walt Disney World Wedding Pavilion in Orlando. The maid of honor was Heyward's sister Dorothea '95. Heyward's sister, Elizabeth '05 was also a bridesmaid. The best man was Russell Gagnon '97. Following the ceremony, the reception was held at the Boardwalk Resort. After a honeymoon at Walt Disney World, the couple took a cruise on the Disney Wonder.
Nina Poe was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at UNC-Chapel Hill and received the Bernard Boyd Memorial Prize as the outstanding senior majoring in religious studies. Nina, who graduates this May, also received a graduate scholarship and will attend Harvard next year.
Mary Hauser, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in May. She was inducted into the University's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Old Well. She also received an award from the French Department. She is teaching 7th and 8th grade English in Brooklyn with Teach for America.

Ryan Hsu placed fifth at the Preparatory School National Wrestling Tournament in Lehigh, PA, which earned him All-American status. He is a senior at Forsyth Country Day School.
Ryanne Mitchell, a senior at West Forsyth High School, has received a scholarship to play soccer at UNC- Charlotte. She is the first African American female at West to sign a soccer scholarship with a NCAA Division I program.

Chelsea Curran was elected Lieutenant Governor of the Carolinas for Key Club International at the regional meeting held in March, 2004.
Derek Nickum and his family live in Steamboat Springs, CO, where Derek is a junior in high school and is training and competing in Alpine skiing with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. He is not only first in his class, but also ranks as a top ten skier in his age group in the western U.S. As a result of his PSAT score, Derek has been recognized and invited to attend the 2004 National Student Leadership Conference and the People to People Future Leaders Summit. He was recently invited to apply for the Class of 2004 Cambridge College Programme in Cambridge, England. He plans to enter the medical field in the future.
Caroline Fedora, a senior at Episcopal High School, was awarded two honors in June, 2004. She was the recipient of the First 48 Merit Scholarship. It is given each year to the returning girl who best represents the ideals of spiritual, moral, physical, and intellectual leadership so aptly demonstrated by the first girls admitted to the school.
Caroline also won the Meade Prize for Scholastic Achievement which recognizes eminent excellence in five credits for the year, two of which must be in a foreign language or one of which must be in a foreign language of at least fourth-year level.
Timothy Pennell is a senior at Forsyth Country Day School where he was selected for the North Carolina High School Honors Chorus. Only 200 of the best high school singers in the state were selected to participate in this highly competitive event. Of all the second tenors in the state, Tim came in fifth place.2003

Ashley Beach is a rising junior at Forsyth Country Day School. She was awarded a maxima cum laude on the National Latin Exam and was named MVP on the Girls' Varsity Tennis Team. She is a Forsyth Scholar (highest honors) for 9th and 10th grades and was accepted to attend Governor's School in Art.
Hollis Mickey won the $500 first-place prize at the Shakespeare Competition sponsored by the Little Theater in May 2004. She is a rising junior at Salem Academy.
