"I had a Dream School in mind where everybody could be a somebody." - Louise Futrell, Founder Louise Futrell's dream was born in September of 1933 despite the country being in the midst of the Great Depression. Originally located in a private home on Summit Street in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the school opened with eighteen students in grades three through eight, three teachers and ten dollars in the treasury. In 1946, Summit moved to its present location where it has continued to grow in enrollment and facilities. Seventy-five years later, Summit School stands on a 28-acre campus and enrolls almost 600 students in pre-kindergarten through ninth grade. Summit has enjoyed a continuity of leadership, from Louise Futrell to Douglas Lewis to Dr. Sandra Adams, and now to incoming head Dr. Michael Ebeling. Although much has changed over the years, the basic philosophy upon which the school was founded is still reflected in today's mission statement: Summit School provides a challenging curriculum within a caring environment to help students reach their full potential.
